2026 Pool Design Trends: What Minnesota Homeowners Are Choosing This Year

Mike Henry, Paragon Pool & Spa|

From tanning ledges to smart automation, here are the pool design trends Twin Cities homeowners are choosing in 2026 — and which ones actually make sense for our climate.

What Pool Features Are Trending in Minnesota in 2026?

The biggest trends I'm seeing in 2026 are tanning ledges (also called sun shelves or Baja shelves), smart pool automation, energy-efficient variable-speed pumps, salt chlorine systems, and automatic safety covers. Minnesota homeowners are also increasingly designing their pools as complete outdoor living spaces — integrating fire features, outdoor kitchens, and landscaping into the overall backyard plan. After 35 years building pools in the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin, I've watched trends come and go. What I share here are the features that genuinely improve the pool experience in our specific climate — not just what looks good on Instagram.

Tanning Ledges: The Most Requested Feature of 2026

A tanning ledge is a broad, shallow area (4–8 inches deep) at one end of the pool where you can set up lounge chairs in the water, or let small children splash safely. It's the most requested feature in our consultations this year by a wide margin. In Minnesota, where our swim season is 3–5 months, a tanning ledge maximizes the usable days — you can enjoy it even when the water is a little cool for full swimming. It also solves the 'I want to be in the pool but also watch the kids' problem that young families face. We build tanning ledges into our vinyl liner pools with a custom steel shelf structure. Typical cost addition: $3,000–$6,000 depending on size. If you're designing a new pool, this is the feature I'd recommend above all others for Minnesota families.

Smart Pool Automation: Control From Your Phone

Pool automation systems from Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy let you control your pump, heater, lights, and water features from a smartphone app — anywhere, anytime. For Minnesota pool owners, this is more than convenience. You can turn on the heater from your office Thursday afternoon so the pool is 84°F when you get home Friday evening. You can check that the pump is running while you're on vacation. You can schedule LED light shows for a Saturday night pool party. The investment is $2,000–$5,000 for a basic automation package. I recommend it for any homeowner who values convenience or travels regularly. It also helps with energy management — scheduling the pump to run during off-peak electricity hours saves real money over a season.

Energy Efficiency: Variable-Speed Pumps and LED Lighting

Variable-speed pumps have become standard rather than premium — and for good reason. A variable-speed pump uses 60–70% less electricity than a single-speed pump. Over our 4–5 month season, that's $300–$600 in annual savings. The pump runs at low speed most of the day for filtration and ramps up only for vacuuming or water features. We include Hayward variable-speed pumps in all our packages. LED pool lighting is the other major efficiency upgrade. LEDs use 80% less energy than traditional incandescent pool lights, last 50,000+ hours (versus 5,000 for incandescent), and offer color-changing capabilities. A set of LED lights adds $800–$1,500 to a pool project and transforms the nighttime experience.

Automatic Safety Covers: Protection and Peace of Mind

Automatic safety covers are growing in popularity — they're no longer a luxury feature but a practical investment, especially for families with young children or pets. One button opens or closes a durable vinyl cover that supports 485+ pounds (ASTM safety rated). Benefits go beyond safety: the cover retains 50–70% of pool heat overnight (critical in Minnesota, where evening temperatures can drop 20–30°F), reduces evaporation by 95%, keeps debris out, and can satisfy your municipality's barrier/fence requirement in some jurisdictions. We install SwimWise and Coverstar automatic covers. Cost: $12,000–$22,000 depending on pool size and cover material. The cover fabric needs replacement every 6–9 years ($2,500–$4,000). For Minnesota homeowners, I consider this the second-best investment after the pool itself — it extends your season, reduces maintenance, and protects your family.

The Backyard Living Room: Pools as Part of a Complete Outdoor Space

The days of a pool sitting alone in a fenced yard are over. In 2026, Twin Cities homeowners are designing integrated outdoor living spaces: pool plus patio, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, and professional landscaping as one cohesive project. This trend makes particular sense in Minnesota because it maximizes the return on your outdoor investment — a fire pit extends enjoyment into October, and a covered patio means rain doesn't cancel the weekend. We work closely with landscapers and hardscape contractors to coordinate the full build. Our subcontractor recommendations are based on 35 years of working with local crews — when I recommend a landscaper or electrician, it's because I've seen their work on hundreds of projects.

Trends I'd Skip (Honest Advice)

Not every trend makes sense for Minnesota. Infinity edges and vanishing edges look stunning but add $15,000–$30,000 and require a surge tank — I only recommend them for properties with dramatic elevation changes. Shallow play pools (under 3 feet throughout) limit functionality and don't add much that a tanning ledge doesn't provide. Natural or chemical-free pools use biological filtration and require significantly more space and maintenance — interesting concept, but not practical for most Twin Cities lots. And while dark-bottom liners are trending nationally for their lagoon-like appearance, they absorb more heat — which sounds good in Minnesota but actually makes water temperature harder to control and can accelerate chemical breakdown. For the money, the features that deliver the most value in our climate are a tanning ledge, automatic cover, salt system, and smart automation. Those four upgrades transform the daily pool experience.
