How Long Does It Take to Build an Inground Pool in Minnesota?

Mike Henry, Paragon Pool & Spa|

Pool construction in Minnesota takes 2–3 weeks for the build itself, with 8–12 weeks total from design to first swim. Here's the realistic timeline from a 35-year Twin Cities pool builder.

How Long Does Pool Construction Take in Minnesota?

Actual pool construction takes 2–3 weeks from the day we break ground. The total project — from your first call to your first swim — takes 8–12 weeks when you factor in design, permits, and scheduling. In 35 years of building pools across the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin, I've learned that the biggest variable isn't the construction itself — it's permits and weather. Minnesota's build window runs roughly May through October, and we can install a pool in as little as 9 days of on-site work when conditions cooperate. The key is starting the planning process early.

Week-by-Week Timeline: What to Expect

Here's a realistic breakdown for a typical east metro pool project. Weeks 1–2: Initial consultation and site assessment — I come to your home, we discuss your vision, review your yard, and I provide a detailed written estimate. Weeks 2–4: Design finalization — we lock in the pool size, shape, depth, equipment, and features. Weeks 3–6: Permitting — this varies dramatically by municipality. Woodbury and Stillwater typically process permits in 2–3 weeks. Some cities take up to 8 weeks. We handle all the paperwork. Weeks 6–8: Construction begins — excavation (1 day), wall and structure installation (2–3 days), plumbing and electrical (2–3 days), liner and finish (1–2 days), equipment installation and fill (2–3 days). Week 8–10: Final inspection, landscaping coordination, water chemistry balancing, and your walkthrough. Then you swim.

Why Minnesota's Build Season Matters

Minnesota's frost line reaches 60–80 inches deep. That means we can't excavate frozen ground, and we need stable soil temperatures for concrete footings to cure properly. The practical build season runs from late April through mid-October, with the peak installation window in May through August. This is why I always tell homeowners: start planning in late winter or early spring. If you call in April and want to swim by July 4th, that's tight but doable if permits cooperate. If you call in June, you're looking at a late-summer or early-fall installation — which is actually fine. Fall installations mean your pool is ready and waiting when spring arrives. Some of our best projects have been September builds.

What Can Delay a Pool Project?

The most common delays are permit processing (especially if your city requires a planning commission review), rain during excavation or concrete work, and waiting on utility locates or gas line connections. We can't control the weather or city hall, but we minimize delays by submitting complete permit applications the first time, scheduling utility locates early, and coordinating subcontractors before we break ground. One thing I'm proud of after 35 years: we don't overbook. When we commit to a start date, we're there. The Cotton family's pool was started two weeks early and finished in nine days — that's the standard we hold ourselves to.

How to Speed Up Your Pool Project

The single best thing you can do is start early. Call for a consultation in January through March, finalize your design by April, and submit permits before the spring rush hits. Other tips: have your financing pre-approved so we're not waiting on bank paperwork, make design decisions during the consultation rather than going back and forth for weeks, and be responsive when we need approvals or access. If you're on a tight timeline, ask about our available start dates during your consultation — we'll give you an honest assessment of what's achievable.
