Fall Pool Equipment Checklist: What to Inspect Before You Close

What Should You Inspect Before You Close Your Pool?

Walk five things before you drain a drop or blow a single line: pump, filter, heater, plumbing fittings and unions, and the cover. Do it while the system is still running and the water is still in the pool — that's one of the only times all year you can watch for leaks under real pressure, listen for a pump that's starting to whine, and see the heater actually fire instead of guessing at everything dry. Timing is the whole reason this beats waiting until spring. A worn pump or a cracked union found in September gets fixed on a calm schedule, with parts ordered and a whole off-season to sort it before anyone needs the pool again. Find that same problem in April and you're competing with every other homeowner in the east metro for the same technician and the same backordered part.

Why Closing Week Beats an April Discovery

Minnesota's build and swim season runs roughly late April through mid-October, which means closing week is also the last calm moment before six months of frozen ground and a quiet phone. That quiet is an advantage if you use it. A pump replacement scheduled in October happens on your timeline — mine included, since fall is far less booked than the first warm week of May. The same job in spring gets squeezed between every opening on our list, and equipment suppliers see the same rush most years, so parts that are in stock in October can be back-ordered by April. Closing-week inspection also means any repair happens before the system sits idle all winter, rather than after. A failing shaft seal shows up where the motor housing meets the wet end, visible as a weeping or crusted ring around that joint, and it's a far easier fix caught in fall than diagnosed cold in spring, after nobody's looked at it in months.

Check the Pump and Filter While Everything Is Still Running

Do this part before you shut anything down, because a running system tells you things a dry one can't. Watch the pump basket lid and housing for weeping or a fine spray at the seams. Those are early signs of a shaft seal or housing crack that a static inspection will miss entirely. Listen for a grinding or screeching pump; that's usually bearings on their way out, and it's far cheaper to replace now than after they seize over winter. Check flow at the return jets — noticeably weaker flow than earlier in the season often means a filter that needs attention or a suction-side restriction. Then shut the system down the safe way before the filter comes open: kill power at the breaker so nothing can cycle on, open the air-relief valve, and wait until the pressure gauge reads zero — a pressurized filter lid is genuinely dangerous. Once it's at zero: on a cartridge system, pull the element and check for tears, collapsed pleats, or a cartridge that no longer restores flow and pressure even after a good cleaning — cartridges typically last several seasons, so don't retire one on age alone; on a sand filter, check the multiport valve for smooth operation. A single-speed pump swap starts around $500 to $1,200 installed (variable-speed replacements and any plumbing changes run more), and a cartridge is roughly $40 to $90, numbers worth knowing while October still gives you time to plan.

Test the Heater Before You Shut It Down for the Season

Closing week is your last chance until next spring to actually run the heater and see how it performs, so don't skip straight to shutting it off. Fire it up and let it run a cycle: listen for unusual noise and confirm it reaches temperature at a normal rate. A heater that's struggling now — slow to heat, short-cycling, or louder than it used to be — is telling you something before winter makes it worse. Gas heaters and heat pumps fail differently, so don't try to diagnose past what you can see from the outside; note the symptoms and let the tech sort out the cause. What you can safely check yourself: rust streaks or discoloration on the cabinet exterior, any error code on the display, and the model number and rough age, which a tech will want anyway. Leave the cabinet closed — the burner, heat exchanger, and combustion air path are professional-only territory, and sealing gaps around cabinet seams or vents (even to keep mice out) can choke off the combustion air a gas heater needs to run safely. A cracked heat exchanger core runs roughly $800 to $2,000 to replace — a fall diagnosis gives a tech months to plan for it instead of an opening-day surprise.

Check the Plumbing, Then the Cover

Once you're ready to winterize, trace every visible run on the equipment pad before the water comes out. Check each union, elbow, and valve body for hairline cracks and stress marks; a fitting that's been slowly weeping all season often shows a faint mineral trail even without an active leak. This matters more in fall than spring: once the lines are blown out and plugged, a compromised fitting is far more likely to fail outright under the freeze-thaw cycle ahead. Pay close attention to the unions at the pump and filter and any threaded connections, where hairline splits usually start. If something looks marginal, replace it now — a fitting is a small, inexpensive part in September and a flooded pad discovery in April. Note what you find, in writing or with a phone photo, before the lines go quiet for winter. Then turn to the cover, which does real work for the next six months: keeping debris and sunlight out and, on a safety cover, carrying real snow load. Check the fabric for tears, sun-worn spots, and failing stitching, especially if it's a few seasons old. On a mesh or solid safety cover, check every strap, buckle, and anchor point; a worn strap or loose anchor is a safety issue too. Confirm the cover still fits, since decking changes and simple wear can leave gaps for debris or critters. If you use water bags or tubes on the edge, check them for punctures now rather than finding a deflated section under the first snowfall.

What to Fix Now vs. What Can Wait Until Spring

Not everything you find needs an immediate repair, and knowing the difference keeps fall inspection from turning into an unnecessary expense. Fix now: anything that affects winterization itself — a fitting that won't hold a plug, a pump that needs to be pulled and stored rather than left connected, or a heater showing rust streaks, active corrosion, or an error code worth a call today. Those problems either get worse sitting untouched all winter or actively put your winterization at risk. Can typically wait, with a plan: cosmetic wear on a filter tank, a cover that's a season or two from replacement but still functional, or a heater efficiency issue that doesn't affect safe operation. A fall inspection is about knowing exactly what you're dealing with. Order the parts that take time to arrive, and walk into spring with a short, already-diagnosed list instead of an unknown one.

Before the ground freezes for good, walk your own pad this weekend and run the five checks above: watch the pump run and listen for anything but a clean hum, check the filter (power off, pressure bled to zero first), fire the heater through a full cycle, trace each union and fitting by hand for cracks, then lay out the cover and look over the fabric, straps, and anchors.
