Building a Pool in Hudson or River Falls? What Western Wisconsin Homeowners Need to Know
Thinking about an inground pool in Western Wisconsin? A Twin Cities pool builder with 35 years of cross-border experience covers permits, costs, climate prep, and what makes WI pool projects unique.
Can a Minnesota Pool Builder Work in Wisconsin?
Yes — and we've been doing it for decades. Paragon Pool & Spa serves Western Wisconsin including Hudson, River Falls, New Richmond, Somerset, and Prescott, in addition to our core Twin Cities service area. The St. Croix River separates the two states but not our service territory. Many of our Western Wisconsin customers find us because there are very few dedicated pool contractors on the Wisconsin side. Most WI homeowners end up working with Minnesota builders anyway — we're just across the bridge. Our Stillwater showroom is less than 15 minutes from Hudson, making site visits and ongoing service convenient for both sides.
Wisconsin Pool Permits: How They Differ from Minnesota
Wisconsin pool permits are handled at the county and municipal level, similar to Minnesota, but the specific requirements can differ. In St. Croix County, you'll typically need a building permit for any permanent in-ground structure. Barrier requirements generally follow Wisconsin Administrative Code SPS 390, which requires a fence or approved barrier around pools. Hudson and River Falls each have their own zoning setback requirements — pool structures usually need to be a certain distance from property lines, easements, and septic systems. If you're on a septic system (common in rural WI), the pool location needs to account for the drainfield. We handle the full permit process for our Wisconsin customers and know the local requirements in each municipality.
What Does a Pool Cost in Western Wisconsin?
Pool pricing in Western Wisconsin is comparable to the east metro side of the Twin Cities — our packages and pricing are the same regardless of which side of the river you're on. A complete 18x36 inground pool package starts at $51,995, including all equipment, steel walls, liner, and a lifetime warranty. Additional costs for permits, electrical, gas, and fencing are similar to Minnesota, though some WI municipalities have different fee structures. The climate is identical — Hudson and the east metro share the same frost line, the same freeze-thaw cycles, and the same construction requirements. You're not paying a cross-border premium.
Climate and Construction: Same Weather, Same Standards
Western Wisconsin and the east metro of Minneapolis-St. Paul share the same climate zone. The frost line in St. Croix County is 60–80 inches deep — identical to Washington County on the Minnesota side. This means pool construction techniques are the same: deep excavation, triple-braced steel walls, concrete footings on sono tubes, and equipment rated for extreme freeze-thaw cycles. Soil conditions do vary by property — some areas of Hudson and River Falls have sandy soil that drains well (great for pools), while other areas have heavier clay that requires additional drainage work. I assess every site individually during our free consultation.
Why Western Wisconsin Homeowners Choose Paragon
The Western Wisconsin pool market is underserved. There aren't many dedicated pool contractors based in St. Croix County, which means homeowners often end up with contractors who travel long distances or lack local experience. Our Stillwater showroom is a short drive from Hudson, River Falls, and the surrounding communities. We're local — when you need service, a liner replaced, or chemicals balanced, we're not two hours away. Brian Jordahl, one of our customers, put it well: 'Twenty-one years later, we are still glad we chose Mike Henry and Paragon Pools. The pool stood the test of time.' That kind of long-term relationship is only possible when your builder is nearby.
